Netflix has been providing plenty of fresh angles on reality tv dating shows with Love is Blind and Too Hot To Handle. Love is Blind may have been fun at the beginning of quarantine but weeks in the premise of Too Hot to Handle is a bit more fun. Turns out it appears the answer is yes. That show challenged contestants to fall in love sight unseen, putting the emphasis on emotional connection versus a physical one. In a sense, Too Hot To Handle is trying to make a similar point, but through an entirely different experiment. Too Hot To Handle takes a bunch of uber-confident, sex-obsessed serial daters on a beautiful tropical retreat. So essentially, Too Hot To Handle is trying to teach the contestants the value of establishing a meaningful connection versus a quick sexual fling.

This year Mashable is celebrating the season of love with Horny on Main , an exploration of the many ways that thirsting for sex affects our lives. I used to call reality TV my guilty pleasure, but I don’t pretend that I’m ashamed anymore. I’m a proud defendant of overproduced, alcohol-drenched trash shows. They’re loud, dramatic for no good reason, and rarely follow a cohesive storyline. Still, they’re so much fun to watch.
The most enjoyable part of the show is never the plot, but the sheer desire embedded in each and every episode.
Search Search. Menu Sections. I wonder what Netflix knows that we don’t. Do they know what’s in Area 51? What’s at the centre of a black hole? How the human brain works? If the Ingrams really did it? What I’m wondering right now is how they knew that this pandemic was going to happen. And how they must have known months in advance. Because why else would they have commissioned a glossy dating show that perfectly mirrors what millions of us are going through? Dating without physical contact – and if you get caught trying, having to pay a fine.

Until the last episode, it is unclear whether this award will be distributed equally among the contestants at the end or whether Lana will choose who she considers most worthy in her eyes.

Though, to me, that premise initially sounded like some fun group financial domination, odd threads of conservative and religious thinking soon stood out as being deeply and intentionally ingrained throughout the show. During episode five, a baptism takes place exclusively for the men.
Love Is Blind graced us with its presence in February, followed by its counterpart in April. On both shows, Christianity is the name of the game. On Love Is Blind , if participants spoke about faith, you could assume they were Christians. While it works for Love Is Blind , in Too Hot to Handle the conservative and Christian overtones simply come off as paternalistic and weird. Here, Too Hot to Handle fails. Love Is Blind won me over in the end with its genuinely likable cast and couples who I deeply wanted to root for.
The very premise of the show assumes that viewers would agree with its crux, that by making it difficult for adults to have sex, it would provide an opportunity for said adults to achieve moral growth. Tweet this.
